UAE and Dubai Trademark Registration
Whether you are opening a store in Dubai or shipping into the UAE market, federal registration is the only way to protect your brand. A single filing covers all seven emirates — there is no separate Dubai application. Let us work through the class plan and the local agent requirement together.

Step 1 / 2Two short steps. We do not ask for a passport or power of attorney at this stage.
Who needs a UAE trademark registration?
For brands entering the Gulf, registration is a separate and more fundamental step than a trade licence. In the situations below, delaying is expensive.
Opening a store or branch in Dubai
For brands opening a retail point, registering the name is a precondition for protecting signage and store identity. A trade licence creates no trademark right.
Manufacturers exporting to the UAE
Brands selling through a distributor or agent. A distributor registering the mark in their own name is the most common dispute in the Gulf market.
Free zone companies
Companies set up in DMCC, JAFZA or IFZA. A free zone licence is only an operating permit; brand protection comes from federal registration.
E-commerce and marketplace sellers
Brands selling through Noon, Amazon.ae and their own store. Marketplace brand programmes generally require a registration or filing receipt.
Restaurant, café and service brands
Concept names and logos are widely copied in the Gulf. A service mark application is built on a description of services rather than goods.
Planning regional expansion
The UAE is usually the gateway to the Gulf. If Saudi Arabia, Qatar or Kuwait are on your plan, the class strategy should be set regionally from the start.
One registration, seven emirates: there is no separate Dubai filing
In the UAE a trademark right arises at federal, not emirate, level. This is the point brands entering the Gulf most often get wrong.
All seven emirates
A single filing with the Ministry of Economy covers Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain together.
No separate registration
Although “Dubai trademark registration” is a common phrase, there is no separate Dubai register. Protection in Dubai comes from the federal registration.
A licence is not a mark
A DMCC, JAFZA or IFZA trade licence is an operating permit. It creates no trademark right and does not stop a third party registering the same name.
GCC filing is separate
There is no single trademark registration covering all Gulf Cooperation Council states at once; a separate filing is made in each country.
The local agent requirement and the power of attorney
Foreign applicants cannot file directly with the office in the UAE. This is the first technical step of the process.
One application per class
This is the second structural difference from the EU and the UK, and it drives the budget directly.
One class, one filing
A single multi-class application is not available in the UAE. If you want protection in three classes, three separate applications are filed, each with its own fee, its own publication and its own registration step.
Class choice drives cost
Because of that structure, adding an unnecessary class is far more expensive here than elsewhere. The list is kept narrow and written from what you actually sell.
Identical-name search
A check for an identical sign on the register. It gives a quick first read but is not enough on its own to base a decision on.
Grounds for refusal
Signs contrary to religious values, public order or morality, and elements liable to be confused with state emblems, can be refused. The name and the logo are each assessed on this basis.
Fees and costs that can arise later
In the table below, official fees and service fees sit on separate lines. Because the Ministry tariff changes periodically, we do not publish fixed amounts on this page.

Documents and information
On a UAE file, the real work sits in legalising the power of attorney and in the class plan.
From filing to registration
Timelines depend on the office’s current workload and how the file develops; no fixed period is given on this page.
- 1Assessment and strategyWe review the mark and target goods and services, then set how many class filings are needed and the budget impact.
- 2Search and list preparationIdentical and similar signs are assessed, refusal risk is reviewed, and the list is drafted to UAE practice.
- 3Power of attorney and legalisationThe notarised power of attorney is prepared and the required legalisation and translation completed.
- 4FilingA separate file per class is submitted to the Ministry of Economy; the application numbers issue at this stage.
- 5Examination and publicationThe office reviews formal requirements and absolute grounds; an accepted application is advertised in the bulletin and the press.
- 6Opposition period and registrationThe opposition window runs after publication. If no opposition arrives, or it resolves in your favour, the registration fee is paid and the certificate issues.
After registration: use, watching and renewal
A UAE registration is also a right that needs managing. The items below are where most losses originate.
Non-use risk
A mark left unused for a continuous statutory period can be the subject of a cancellation action by a third party. Evidence of use should be archived from the outset.
Distributor control
The most common Gulf dispute is a distributor registering the mark in their own name. Ownership must be set out clearly in the agency agreement.
Renewal
Protection is renewed in ten-year periods and renewal is calculated per class. Missing the window puts the right at risk.
Keeping the register current
Changes of name, address and ownership must be recorded. An out-of-date entry can mean missed correspondence.
