International Trademark Registration

When you enter a new market you prepare your product, your sales channels and your advertising budget. Your rights to the brand in that market belong to the same preparation. International trademark registration gives your brand name or logo protection in the countries you choose, for the goods or services you specify. A registration obtained in Türkiye does not take effect in other countries on its own.

With MarcaWorld you can compare filing options for the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union and your other target markets. Choose countries and classes to see your estimated cost, and request a free attorney pre-check to have your mark’s registrability assessed. That way you can settle your scope and your needs before you file.

Trademark Registration by Country

No two countries run the same trademark system. In some markets your use of the mark matters most; in others it is the local-language version of your brand name or the scope of your application. The options below help you plan the protection that fits your goal.

United States Trademark Registration

US trademark registration is worth considering for businesses that sell products into the US, run e-commerce there or serve American customers. Federal applications are handled by the USPTO. Whether the mark is already in use in the US, and which filing basis fits, are central to preparing the file. Intent-to-use applications require a statement of use before registration, and further steps and costs may arise depending on the file.

Applicants domiciled outside the US must be represented before the USPTO by an attorney licensed in the United States. When you weigh the starting cost, look at the number of classes, representation and later procedural needs together.

United Kingdom Trademark Registration

UK trademark registration is one of the filing options for businesses that want brand protection in the British market. A national registration through the UKIPO covers the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man. A new European Union trade mark gives no protection in the UK.

If you sell both to the UK and to EU countries, assess the two scopes together. Having a company in the UK does not remove the need to search and plan a registration for your brand name separately.

European Union Trademark Registration

EU trademark registration offers protection in all 27 member states with a single application through the EUIPO. It suits businesses entering several EU markets such as Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Romania.

An EU trade mark does not cover every country on the European continent. Protection for the UK and Switzerland has to be planned separately. If you will operate in a single EU country only, compare a national filing with an EU filing in terms of cost and the results of your trademark search.

Türkiye Trademark Registration

Türkiye trademark registration applications are filed with TÜRKPATENT. The brand name, the logo and the goods or services to be protected should be set according to what the business actually does. If you sell in Türkiye and plan to expand abroad, you can assess your local and international filings together. Keeping the owner and the scope of protection consistent across files in different countries helps you manage your trademark portfolio in an orderly way.

Germany Trademark Registration

German trademark registration can be obtained with a national application through the DPMA. If most of your sales are in Germany, compare this option with an EU trade mark. In examination the DPMA does not search of its own motion for conflicts with earlier similar rights; earlier right holders can oppose after registration. That is why a similarity search before filing and monitoring after registration should be planned together.

Canada Trademark Registration

Canada trademark registration through CIPO gives protection across the country. A US registration does not automatically cover Canada; if you sell in both countries you need separate protection for each market. A Canadian application is assessed on the distinctiveness of the mark, similar records and the description of the goods or services. Do not treat a clear search result from another country as directly valid for Canada.

United Arab Emirates and Dubai Trademark Registration

Dubai trademark registration, as the process is often searched for, is carried out under the federal trademark system of the United Arab Emirates. Protection is not limited to Dubai. Registering a company or trade name in Dubai does not replace a trademark registration. For applicants based abroad, representation, power of attorney and translation requirements have to be taken into account when the file is prepared. The brand name and logo to be used in the local market should be decided from the start.

Saudi Arabia Trademark Registration

Saudi Arabia trademark registration applications are handled by SAIP. For brand names in a foreign language, preparing the translation and transliteration is an important part of the file. If you will also use an Arabic version of your mark, you can assess the protection that sign needs separately. Because a registration obtained in the UAE gives no automatic protection in Saudi Arabia, filings for the Gulf markets should be planned country by country.

Australia Trademark Registration

Australia trademark registration applications are handled by IP Australia. In suitable files the TM Headstart service makes it possible to obtain the office’s preliminary assessment before the formal application. This option can help you spot likely problems early while the application is being prepared. The standard application and the pre-assessment option should be compared according to the type of mark, the filing requirements and your timing.

New Zealand Trademark Registration

For a New Zealand trademark registration, protection is requested from IPONZ. Because an Australian registration does not take effect in New Zealand on its own, businesses targeting both markets need to assess separate filing options. A search of the IPONZ register helps you review existing and pending marks. Preparing your list of goods or services to suit a New Zealand application also matters for setting the scope correctly.

China Trademark Registration

China trademark registration turns heavily on the filing date; the system rests essentially on the first-to-file principle. Assessing trademark protection before you start selling or manufacturing in China lets you plan the application in good time. In the CNIPA process the scope of the goods to be protected should be settled along with the brand name. If you will use a different local brand name in the Chinese market, deal with the search and the protection needs of that sign separately.

Romania Trademark Registration

Romania trademark registration can be obtained with a national application through OSIM. Because an EU trade mark also covers Romania, if you already hold an EU registration you should review its scope first. A business that operates only in Romania has different needs from one that plans to grow across several EU countries. Comparing national and regional filing options against that goal helps you avoid unnecessary filing costs.

International Trademark Registration Fees and Timelines

International trademark registration fees vary with the target country, the number of classes, the official fees and the scope of service. Later stages of an application may bring additional needs such as a statement of use, translation or opposition proceedings. When you compare prices, compare the same scope.

In the calculator on this page you can select your countries and classes and see the service fee and the estimated official fees. Filing the application and completing the registration are different stages. How long it takes depends on the office’s examination and the state of the file; the country guides explain each process in detail.

A national filing or the Madrid route?

The two are not alternatives to each other; which one fits depends on how many countries you target and how your portfolio is planned.

Route 1

Direct national filing

You file straight with the target country’s office. Where few countries are targeted, this is the most predictable route.

✓The process runs with one office and is simple to follow
✓The goods and services list is drafted to that country’s practice
▪Each country needs its own fee and its own representation
Route 2

The Madrid Protocol

One filing designates many countries. The administrative and cost advantage grows with the number of countries.

✓One file, one renewal calendar
▪A basic application or registration is required
✕If the basic application falls, the whole file is affected (central attack)
Route 3

A regional system

Systems like the EU trade mark cover several countries with one filing. Coverage is wide, but the unity principle carries risk.

✓One fee covers 27 member states (the EU case)
▪Use is assessed against the whole territory
✕An objection in one country can affect the entire application
!The Madrid route is not always cheaper. If you target one or two countries, a direct national filing is usually both faster and more predictable. In some countries, files arriving through Madrid can also trigger extra steps because of local examination differences.

What every country has in common

These topics are not repeated on the country pages; they are set out once here.

Nice classes

Goods and services are divided into 45 classes: 1–34 for goods, 35–45 for services. Class count drives both scope of protection and cost. An unnecessarily broad list raises the risk of refusal and opposition.

Similarity searching

The absence of an identical name on the register does not mean registration is assured. Offices assess similar signs, the relatedness of the goods and services, and the likelihood of confusion together.

Word marks and logos

They give different scopes of protection. A word mark covers the name irrespective of styling; a logo protects a particular visual whole. One or both is chosen according to how you use the mark.

Opposition

In most countries the application is published and third parties can oppose within a set period. In some, such as Germany, opposition comes after registration — which changes the risk plan.

The obligation to use

Not using a mark after registration can cost you the right. The period varies by country (typically three to five years). Evidence of use should be archived from the outset.

Renewal

Protection standardly runs for ten years and can be renewed in ten-year periods. The renewal fee is usually calculated by class count; missing the window puts the right at risk.
